Our Expertise

UK Customs Brokerage Services

Import Customs Clearance

We handle every step of clearing your goods into the UK. Pre-arrival document review, commodity code classification, duty and VAT calculation, CDS entry submission and physical clearance at the port or airport. We clear imports at Heathrow, Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway, Tilbury, Gatwick and East Midlands.

Import regularly? We set up facilitated processes that cut your paperwork, speed up releases and lower your per-entry costs on every entry.

Export Customs Clearance

Every commercial shipment leaving the UK needs an export declaration. We submit all export entries electronically and get your permission to progress before goods depart. UK export controls, sanctions and destination country requirements all covered.

If your goods qualify under a free trade agreement, we prepare the origin declarations and movement certificates so your customer pays less duty at their end. We also manage dual-use goods licensing and end-user documentation.

Duty Optimisation

Overpaying duty hits your margins directly. We review your commodity codes, origin declarations and available reliefs to make sure you pay the correct -- and lowest lawful -- duty rate on every import. We regularly find savings that businesses did not know existed.

  • Commodity code classification review
  • Preferential origin and free trade agreement benefits
  • Customs warehousing and duty suspension
  • Inward and outward processing relief
  • Temporary admission for goods re-exported
  • End-use relief where applicable
  • Retrospective duty reclaim for overpayments

Documentation & Compliance

Wrong paperwork is the number one cause of customs delays and penalties. Our team checks and prepares all documentation before your goods reach the port: commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, phytosanitary certificates, conformity certificates and sector-specific permits.

Post-Brexit UK-EU rules change regularly. We stay on top of them so you do not have to. Food, chemicals, medical devices, electronics -- if your goods need an import licence or UKCA marking, we tell you what is needed before you ship.

UK Ports & Airports Covered

KAM Freight processes customs entries at every major UK port and airport. Our electronic lodgement capability means we can clear your goods regardless of where they arrive, with no need for a physical presence at the border.

Avoid Costly Mistakes

Common Customs Issues We Solve

Wrong Commodity Codes

Get the HS code wrong and you pay the wrong duty rate. HMRC can issue penalties and hold your goods at the border. We check every classification before submission.

Missing Paperwork

The single biggest cause of port delays. We check all documents before your goods arrive and chase anything missing. No nasty surprises at the border.

Paying Too Much Duty

Most importers overpay without knowing it. We review your trade agreements, available reliefs and valuations to cut your duty bill to the legal minimum.

Post-Brexit UK-EU Mistakes

Rules of origin, safety declarations and new import procedures trip up businesses every day. We handle all post-Brexit customs paperwork so you stay compliant.

Classification

Commodity Code Classification

Assigning the correct commodity code (also called HS code or tariff code) is fundamental to customs clearance. The code determines the duty rate, any applicable trade controls and whether your goods qualify for preferential treatment. Errors in classification can lead to overpayment of duty, penalties from HMRC, seizure of goods or delays at the border. KAM Freight provides expert classification advice across all product categories.

FAQ

Customs Clearance FAQs

How long does customs clearance take in the UK?

Standard customs clearance takes 1-4 hours from entry submission, as long as all documentation is correct. Pre-lodged entries (submitted before your goods arrive) can be cleared almost instantly on arrival. If HMRC selects your goods for examination, allow 1-3 working days.

How much does customs clearance cost in the UK?

Customs clearance fees depend on the complexity of the entry, the number of commodity lines and whether you need extra services like classification advice or duty relief applications. We charge competitive per-entry rates and offer volume discounts for regular importers. Contact us with your typical shipment details for a specific quote.

What documents are needed for customs clearance UK?

For UK imports you need a commercial invoice (showing seller, buyer, goods description, value and Incoterms), packing list (weight, dimensions, package count), transport document (bill of lading, airway bill or CMR) and any commodity-specific certificates. Depending on the goods: certificates of origin, conformity certificates, phytosanitary certificates, import licences or safety data sheets.

What is customs clearance and do I need it?

Customs clearance is the process of declaring goods to HMRC when they enter or leave the UK. It is a legal requirement for all commercial imports and exports. Without it, your goods get held at the port and may be seized. A customs clearance agent like KAM Freight submits the entries, calculates duty and VAT, and gets your goods released.

Do I need an EORI number to import to the UK?

Yes. You need a UK EORI number to import or export commercial goods. If you trade with the EU, you may also need a separate EU EORI number. Apply through the HMRC website -- it usually takes a few working days. We can guide you through the application.

How do UK-EU customs work after Brexit?

All goods moving between the UK and EU now need customs declarations. We handle export declarations, safety and security declarations, import entries, rules of origin and preference claims under the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement. We also manage Northern Ireland Protocol requirements.

What happens if my goods get held at UK customs?

Goods get held for documentation errors, HMRC examination, licensing issues or suspected non-compliance. We act immediately to find out why and fix it. For document problems, we liaise with HMRC. For examinations, we attend on your behalf. We also handle post-clearance amendments and appeals.

Can I reclaim overpaid import duty UK?

Yes. If you overpaid because of wrong commodity codes, incorrect valuation or unclaimed reliefs, we submit a retrospective duty reclaim to HMRC. You can claim back overpayments from the last three years. We regularly recover significant amounts for businesses that did not know they were overpaying.

What is the difference between CDS and CHIEF?

CDS (Customs Declaration Service) has replaced CHIEF as HMRC's customs system. All UK import declarations now go through CDS. We have been fully operational on CDS since launch. If your previous broker was still on CHIEF, we handle the switch.
